The sanctuary is a home to all wild species common to Thailand such as gibbons, macaques, slow loris, porcupine, and civet cat, which are in need of protection. The sanctuary currently houses almost 100 wild animals. The purpose was to create a home to these wild animals that can not be released back into the wild for various reasons. The ideal is to keep their life as close as possible to a natural situation. Conservation and education are key components of the project to limit future destruction of the local ecosystem.
At present, there are many of wild animals being held in captivity, although this is illegal. Their circumstances prevent them from selecting mates and breeding. The wild animal populations continue to decline, especially the gibbons, and the next decade will see further losses as accessible wild populations are gradually hunted out.
The Wild Animal Rescue and Education Centre (WARED) was established at the beginning of 2001. In 2003, 50 macaques were rescued from animal laboratory experimentation. These animals had been kept in very small cages for the past 10 years and were in very poor condition. After lengthy negotiations the animals were released to project's care.
Volunteers are very necessary and welcome to the Center. The work that you will be carrying out is often difficult and dirty but your presence here is extremely valuable and you will make a real difference by choosing to come and volunteer with us. This project is relatively new and there is still much to do to improve the basic structure such as path clearing and building of cages. You will be asked to do general day-to-day tasks so that the staff can continue with infrastructure improvements.
Volunteers work a six-day week usually for 8 hours per day. Work includes food preparation, cleaning of cages, assisting in general animal welfare. Also the data collection for animal is an interesting task. Development of the site is ongoing and volunteers are required to become involved in whatever stage of the project is being progressed during their stay. Additionally, volunteers will be included in our education programs to locals. The only way to save the wild animals is conservation and education. Volunteers will assist the Thai staff to educate local people and school groups about the importance of conserving these animals and their habitat, as well as not supporting any business exploiting wild animals. We regularly host school groups from throughout Thailand and are able to provide information that we hope will give the next generation of local people a better understanding of the natural environment.
